House of Parliament 2009

FEEDBACK

The tour of Parliament was about 90 minutes long. You see rooms affiliated with the House of Lords as well as the House of Commons. Our tour guide was very good and had a great sense of humour about British history, politics and royalty. We were not allowed to take photos inside Parliament except for the Westminster Hall which is all that is remaining from the original Parliament building which was devastated by the London fire. The Hall has an incredible wood roof that is the largest in northern Europe. Our tour was one dazzling room after another with the Lords side being a bit more royal looking- with painted and guilded ceilings and the Commons side being a bit more “plain” with heavy use of wood panelling and single colour ceilings. Colours such as scarlet and gold has all the grandeur one would expect in this chamber, it was a great honour to see the magnificent Gothic Revival masterpiece. Overall, I enjoyed my visit and most of all enjoyed organising this event.

On the 29 September 09 an official tour to the house of parliament was organized by Afghan Council Based in UK where numbers of Afghan students and individuals who were waiting desperately for this moment were ultimately given a chance to discover the glorious parliament. It was one of the biggest efforts of Afghan council UK so far to arrange such unique visit, the management and gathering of all participants and students in this tour was great and its credits goes to Mr.Maywand and Miss Mariam. We learned loads of information and references about the important figures of the United Kingdom, the history of British parliament and how they have sustained their current diplomatic systems with having over 300 years in democracy and freedom of speech.
In my opinion the aim to this tour for us Afghans were to see how people from different ethnic origins, colours, thoughts ,religions and beliefs ruled the world’s biggest empire and now a super power nation. We as the new generation of Afghans need to take these references from this visit and implement it in our devastated country to have a similar parliament system and show the world that Afghans are against killing, violence and fundamentalists. This could only do by educating our selves, respecting our each others idea and giving equal opportunity to women.

One to actually understand what caters behind the artistic and tall walls of this government building are more of a valuable experience which we all had a chance to gain by visiting the houses of parliament. Personally, I would say it was a good day out. The tour around the building made us achieve a good amount of history and dealings which usually happens to take place behind the closed doors. As an intact we all had a good feel of the ancient and medieval England through the brilliance portrayed by its architecture. To put the whole event in contrast to our achievement from this trip, personally I would signify that I had a good lesson in government and history which shall accommodate me in my good memories.

I was very excited just to know I would walk on the same path used by the Queen when she opens Parliament was a great privilege. There were a lot of tours all going at the same time however this was not an issue. Be prepared to be on your feet for 1 to 2 hours to take in the interesting history these remarkable buildings hold. Security is high; however this is only to be expected. I could not help but touch the stone walls as you can feel the history within them. Personally, I would say it was a great experience, certainly one not to be forgotten.

The tour was extremely well organized and guided. There were a few tours going at once. The building is amazing both inside and out and our tour guide was very informative on the history and traditions. It was great to hear the history of the place and see what we had previously only seen on television. It was a great honour and I would certainly recommend this everyone.

I have a huge interest in history, which probably explains my excitement about visiting the Houses of Parliament. Our guide was very knowledgeable and also acquainted us with the rules of the tour, what to expect - such as little to no sitting with certain exceptions. I would strongly suggest a tour for anyone interested in politics or world events.

We arranged passes thorough our MP before we travelled, the tour was interesting and the guide was very knowledgeable. The architecture was fabulous - particularly the House of Lords. We were able to access the public gallery and witness the wonderful art. It was absolutely enjoyable, even for those in our party not particularly interested in politics.

After going though security you are allocated a tour guide who takes you around the various rooms. Once inside the building can only be described as stunning. Our tour guide was brilliant, very funny and had lots of history to tell us about the place. You are also taken into the houses of commons and Lords which was amazing to see. The tour takes around an hour and afterwards there is a little shop to buy merchandise and a well priced cafe.
